II Mário Schenberg Meeting: Half Century of Low Temperatures at USP

The second edition of the MS Meeting (November 21-22) celebrated the 50th anniversary of the LESBT - Laboratório de Estado Sólido e Baixas Temperaturas. The event program was centered in this laboratory history, pioneer in the development of low temperatures in Brazil, and filled by scientific lectures and historical keynotes given by DFMT members and invited speakers.

One of the most relevant points of the event was the presence of renowned speakers such as former Science and Technology Ministers José Israel Vargas and Sérgio Machado Rezende. Furthermore, the lectures of eminent physicist who participated in the laboratory foundation gifted the audience with a major class on the solid-state physics development history in USP and in Brazil.

Four key members were awarded in the II EMS: Carlos José de Azevedo Quadros, first LESBT group leader and pionner in the low temperature experimental physics; Luiz Guimarães Ferreira, pioneer in the solid-state theoretical research in USP and first LESBT academic advisor; Armando Paduan Filho, formally retired recently but still continuing his brilliant carrier in the laboratory, and Francisco de Paula Oliveira (Paulinho), in activity since 1963 as employee symbol of those who contributed with technical Support.

In parallel with the event, an exposition was organized at the IFUSP Library displaying the highlights of LESBT history and present. The exposition will continue open during dezember and can be accessed online by event webpage "http://fmt.if.usp.br/~crio/LESBT50".
