Descrição

Abstract: The distribution of galaxies encodes a wealth of information on dark energy, dark matter, gravity, and inflation. However, extraction of robust cosmological constraints requires us to abstract from the highly uncertain physics of galaxy formation. The unique well-controlled, symmetry-based approach to this problem is the effective field theory of large-scale structure. I will discuss a new Wilson-Polchinski-like approach to renormalize this EFT. This approach has allowed us to clarify a key component of the EFT, namely the stochastic, effective-noise contributions. Moreover, it enables us to couple new inference approaches such as field-level inference, which do not compress the galaxy field into n-point functions, to the robustness of the EFT. I will present recent, highly promising results from field-level inference on idealized, but fully nonlinear data. Finally, I will discuss which new cosmological physics we can hope to discover with this novel tool.
