HyperKamiokande: Status and Prospects

HyperKamiokande is a next generation long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment currently under construction in Japan. This experiment will collect an order of magnitude more statistics as well as employing new detectors which will reduce the fundamental experimental uncertainties associated with prior neutrino oscillation experiments. In so doing it will make the world's most sensitive measurement of neutrino oscillations and the leptonic CP violating phase. Neutrino masses are our only confirmed beyond the Standard Model physics and neutrino leptogenesis could explain the baryon asymmetry of our universe, making this experiment our most powerful window into new physics. It follows in the foot steps of the other highly successful water Cherenkov neutrino experiments conducted in Japan as part of the long base line programme at J-PARC. This seminar will summarise the achievements of the programme to date, report the current status of the construction of this exciting new experiment and look to the future expected measurements from this experiment which are on the frontier of neutrino physics.

John Nugent is a Research Associate at Imperial College London and he previously worked as a JSPS Research fellow at Tohoku University, Japan, and at the University of Glasgow. His research interests include neutrino oscillations, neutrino interaction physics and developing the detectors and beam line upgrades necessary for the future long base line water Cherenkov experiments hosted in Japan.
