The Institute of Physics of the University of São Paulo, commonly referred to as IFUSP, offers Master's and Ph.D stricto sensu courses that train qualified professionals to act in various fields of physics and in interdisciplinary fields as well.
Our graduates are trained to conduct research, formulate and solve problems related to physics and various areas of knowledge, including non-academic sectors. Those who graduated from IFUSP work in universities, national and foreign research centers, as well as in the industrial sector, business field and health sector. The training offered to the students seeks to develop logical thinking, creativity and intellectual flexibility. This way, they can learn how to deal with the evolution of fields of knowledge and also actively participate in the creation of knowledge and technological innovation.
IFUSP's graduate program is one of the pioneers in Brazil. It was officially created in 1970, but it trained and granted degrees since the end of the 1940s. Since its official implementation, IFUSP has graduated a significant number of professionals: 1439 masters and 1020 doctors (data from 2017).
With over 111 advisors and 280 students as of early 2018, its graduate studies program has an extraordinary thematic diversity, which makes it unique in the Brazilian academic scenario. The activities developed under our program cover different areas, ranging from cosmology to biophysics, from environmental physics to materials science. Almost all areas of our branch of science are covered: nuclear physics, condensed matter physics, optics, biophysics, molecular and atomic physics, mathematical physics, plasma physics, cosmology, particles and fields, statistical mechanics, applied physics and instrumentation, etc.
IFUSP has an excellent infrastructure for the development of research by professors and graduate students. Modern and well-equipped labs, broad and up-to-date IT resources and one of the very best scientific libraries in the country are some of the things offered to those who carry out their graduate studies here.
