Presentation
The “Invitation to Physics”, launched in 2004, is a series of colloquia open to the general public and especially dedicated to students entering undergraduate courses at the University of São Paulo, regardless of the field or career they are pursuing. Its objective is to present Physics and its research topics in accessible language, discussing its methods, its contributions to our vision of the world and its diverse applications to other Sciences and Technology in general.
The series aims to present Physics as a fundamental science of profound relevance for a better understanding of the world, emphasizing, on the one hand, its empirical origin and, on the other, its need for abstraction. Physics is fundamentally an experimental science. But an experimental science is not merely a set of empirical procedures. Physicists formulate hypotheses, propose laws, invent models, thus creating a theoretical framework that allows them to describe the phenomena observed in Nature and predict the results of new experiments and observations. Our understanding of Nature depends on the constant confrontation between experience and theory.
The colloquia of the “Invitation to Physics” series are held on Wednesdays, at 6:00 p.m., in the Abrahão de Moraes Auditorium of IFUSP. Admission is free and no prior registration is necessary.
