Abstract:

Optical spectroscopy techniques have extensively used tryptophan (Trp) as an intrinsic probe of protein structure and dynamics. By monitoring protein and water response to the optical excitation of Trp it has been possible to get insights about protein dynamics and water motions near their surface. Thought there is plenty information of protein motions in time scales longer than few picoseconds less is known about the protein structural response within the first few tens of femtoseconds. In this talk I will show some results of my work related to the study of protein and water response in less than 100 fs upon photo-excitation of Trp. The initial excited-state structural dynamics of Trp will be also discussed. This dynamics was characterized using ultraviolet resonance Raman spectroscopy (UVRR) in combination with the time-dependent wave packet propagation theory.
