Context and Current Structure

The Department of Condensed Matter Physics (DFMT) was established in the 1960s, inspired by Professor Mário Schenberg, with the goal of positioning Brazil in the field of condensed matter physics research.

In the 1980s, DFMT consolidated its experimental and theoretical structure, dividing into four independent groups:

  • Solid State and Low Temperatures Laboratory (LESBT)
  • Magnetic Materials Laboratory (LMM)
  • New Semiconductor Materials Laboratory (LNMS)
  • Theoretical Group on Electronic Properties of Materials

In the 1990s, two research lines became independent laboratories:

  • Phase Transitions and Superconductivity Laboratory
  • Magneto-Optics and Nonlinear Spectroscopy Laboratory

With the advancement of research and the emergence of nanoscience and nanotechnology, DFMT began diversifying its research lines, promoting greater integration between laboratories and strengthening national and international collaborations.

Current Structure of Research Groups
