COLÓQUIO DO MAP - DIA 20.10.17

Palestrante: Antoine Laurain - IME/USP

Título: Recent advances in shape optimization

Resumo: Shape optimization is a branch of optimal control theory, whose objective is to find shapes, or numerical approximations of these shapes, which minimize certain cost functionals while satisfying given constraints, usually PDE constraints. Shape optimization is multidisciplinary, borrowing elements from optimization, PDEs, optimal control, differential geometry, numerical analysis, and has applications in structural mechanics, inverse problems, imaging, PDE-constrained optimization and free boundary problems. In this talk I will discuss some current research topics in shape optimization, and I will focus in particular on the topic of shape differentiation with low regularity shapes, such as polygons or Lipschitz domains.

I will show several applications of shape optimization with low regularity such as a famous conjecture of Polya about the minimization of the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian in the class of polygons, and applications in level set methods, structural mechanics, and inverse problems.
