Abstract:

In the past two decades, experiments concerning few monolayer (ML) of insulating films revealed different physical properties of single adsorbates. Amongst them, charge state determination and control of Au adatoms (1) and charge distribution within a molecule (2). But in order to efficiently decouple the system of interest to the substrate, several nanometer thickness of the insulating film are required – allowing higher charge state control of adsorbates (3). Here we present results concerning molecules and their charge state determination and control via atomic force microscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy measurements on NaCl films ranging from 5 to 20 ML and demonstrate lateral single electron transfer between molecules (4).
