Abstract:

Material chemistry depends on interdisciplinary research targeting design, (trans-) formation, structure analysis and application of materials and minerals. Insight in the chemical processes occurring at interfaces not only enables design and synthesis of new technologically attractive structures, but also provides key information for a score of other research fields with direct impact on our daily lives. X-ray based techniques play a key role as they provide essential information on structure and dynamics of BIFUSP 3. materials from macroscopic down to atomic scales. Only such a scale-covering approach allows identification and elucidation of structure; and is essential for gaining mechanistic understanding of chemical processes relevant for synthesis, application or disposal of chemical compounds. X-ray methods such as XAS, SAXS and HEXS and XRD at various levels of data analysis can provide the missing link between fragmented information available from other characterization techniques.
