Eliana Sousa Silva, diretora da Redes da Maré, assume a Cátedra Olavo Setubal de Arte, Cultura e Ciência
No dia 27 de março, a educadora e ativista social Eliana Sousa Silva tomou posse como a nova titular da Cátedra Olavo Setubal de Arte, Cultura e Ciência, uma parceria entre o IEA e o Itaú Cultural. Ela substitui o designer Ricardo Ohatke, que ocupou a vaga em 2017. Em cerimônia marcada pela emoção, a catedrática lembrou a morte de sua amiga Marielle Franco, vereadora brutalmente assassinada no dia 14 de março no Rio de Janeiro. Para Eliana, que, assim como Marielle, cresceu na Favela da Maré, a cátedra é uma oportunidade de contribuir com "a luta para que muitas outras Marielles surjam e possam viver com plenitude, alegria e liberdade". Ela quer contribuir para que a universidade “seja mais aberta, mais democrática, mais negra e periférica”.

On March 27, educator and social activist Eliana Sousa Silva took office as the new holder of IEA's Olavo Setubal Chair in Art, Culture and Science, a partnership with Itaú Cultural. She replaces designer Ricardo Ohatke, who took the place in 2017. In a ceremony marked by emotion, the professor recalled the death of her friend Marielle Franco, a city councilwoman brutally murdered on March 14 in Rio de Janeiro. For Silva, who like Franco grew up in the Favela da Maré, the chair is an opportunity to contribute to "the struggle for many other Marielles to emerge and to live in fullness, joy and freedom." She wants to contribute to the university "being more open, more democratic, more black and peripheral."

Diretores de IEAs definem diretrizes de rede internacional para os próximos dois anos
O IEA-USP tornou-se o nó central da rede internacional Ubias (sigla em inglês para Institutos de Estudos Avançados Baseados em Universidades) para os próximos dois anos. Isso aconteceu com a eleição do vice-diretor do IEA, Guilherme Ary Plonski, para ser o coordenador da entidade até 2020. A escolha de Plonski ocorreu durante a reunião de diretores de IEAs integrantes da Ubias realizada no IEA-USP de 19 a 23 de março. O encontro tratou das atividades da rede nos últimos dois anos, discutiu temas para atividades conjuntas dos institutos e aprovou a ampliação de 39 para 44 membros. Entre os novos participantes está o Instituto de Estudos Avançados Transdisciplinares (Ieat) da UFMG, o qual passa a integrar a representação brasileira ao lado do IEA-USP e do Instituto de Estudos Avançados (IdEA) da Unicamp.
Directors of institutes for advanced study define international network guidelines for the next two years
The IEA-USP has become a protagonist of the international network UBIAS (University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study) for the next two years. This happened with the election of the Institute's deputy director, Guilherme Ary Plonski, to be the coordinator of the entity until 2020. Plonski's choice came during the directors' business meeting, one of the sessions of the network's conference held at the IEA-USP from March 19 to 23. The conference addressed the activities of the network in the last two years, discussed topics for joint activities of the institutes and approved the enlargement from 39 to 44 members. Among the new participants is the IEAT-UFMG (Instituto de Estudos Avançados Transdisciplinares), which joins the Brazilian representation in the network alongside the IEA-USP and the IDEA-UNICAMP.

Carlos Nobre trata dos avanços na pesquisa sobre o Sistema Terra
Carlos Afonso Nobre, um dos maiores especialistas no país na área de mudanças ambientais globais e pesquisador do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (Inpe), estará no IEA para o encontro Conversa sobre o Sistema Terra, no dia 10 de abril, às 10h, na Sala Alfredo Bosi, com transmissão ao vivo pelo site do IEA. Segundo os organizadores, por mais antiga que seja a suspeita de que a Terra deva ser entendida como um sistema, essa ideia só começou a amadurecer na segunda metade dos anos 1980. No encontro, Nobre abordará os avanços nos estudos sobre o tema.
Carlos Nobre addresses research advancements on the Earth System
Carlos Afonso Nobre, one of the country's leading specialists in global environmental change and a researcher at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), will hold a talk on the Earth System on April 10 at 10.00 am in IEA's Alfredo Bosi Room, with live streaming. According to the organizers, as old as the suspicion that the Earth should be understood as a system may be, this idea only began to mature in the second half of the 1980s. In this encounter, Nobre will address advancements in the studies on the Earth System.

Seminário propõe repensar a divisão das grandes áreas do conhecimento
A divisão do conhecimento em três grandes áreas será tema de um encontro que pretende questionar tal separação e propor um novo formato para ser utilizado nas universidades brasileiras. O seminário (Re)discussão Sobre as Grandes Áreas do Conhecimento acontece no dia 13 de abril, às 14h, na Sala Alfredo Bosi, no IEA, com transmissão ao vivo pelo site do IEA. O organizador do evento, o músico e professor Rubens Russomanno Ricciardi, defende que a divisão cristalizada do conhecimento em Ciências Exatas, Biológicas e Humanas tem levado, não raramente, a resultados acadêmicos menos fecundos que o desejado, prejudicando o planejamento e a realização das atividades de ensino, pesquisa e extensão.
Seminar proposes to rethink the division of the great areas of knowledge
The division of knowledge into three major areas will be the subject of a meeting that intends to question such separation and propose a new format to be used in Brazilian universities. The seminar '(Re)discussion on the Great Knowledge Areas' will take place on April 13, at 2.00 pm, in IEA's Alfredo Bosi Room, with a live broadcast through the Institute's website. The organizer of the event, musician and professor Rubens Russomanno Ricciardi, argues that the crystallized division of knowledge in Exact, Biological and Human Sciences has not infrequently led to academic results that are less fruitful than desired, harming the planning and carrying out of teaching, research and extension activities.

Embaixador brasileiro faz conferência e lança livro sobre a ameça aos direitos humanos
A crise pela qual passam os direitos humanos, o descrédito que parte da população dá ao tema e as ameaças reais a esses direitos são assunto do novo livro do embaixador José Augusto Lindgren Alves. Ele estará no IEA no dia 6 de abril, às 14h, para lançar a obra “É preciso salvar os direitos humanos” e discutir a questão na palestra Direitos Humanos no Brasil e no Mundo. Haverá transmissão ao vivo pela web.
Brazilian ambassador will be at the IEA to give a conference and launch a book on the threat to human rights
The crisis which human rights are undergoing, the discredit that part of the population gives to the subject and the real threats to these rights are the subject of the new book of ambassador José Augusto Lindgren Alves. He will be at the IEA on April 6, at 2.00 pm, to launch his work and discuss the issue with the lecture 'Human Rights in Brazil and in the World.' There will be a live webcast.

Cientista política alemã debate as diversas formas de democracia
Os prós e contras dos debates sobre a democracia e aspectos atuais das abordagens para os diferentes formatos desse sistema político serão discutidos no dia 20 de abril, às 9h, no IEA. Anja Mihr, fundadora e diretora de um programa do Centro Humboldt-Viadrina de governança através dos direitos humanos, em Berlim, abordará as formas de democracia multinível, multi-stakeholder, líquida e "além do institucionalismo". Entre outras reflexões que serão abordadas, está a questão do que aconteceria se as instituições – parlamentos , governos, partidos políticos e até tribunais e burocracias efetivas – já não fossem fundamentais para as partes interessadas (stakeholders). Haverá transmissão ao vivo pela internet. Para participar presencialmente é necessário realizar inscrição prévia.
German political scientist discusses the various forms of democracy
The pros and cons of the debates on democracy and current aspects of approaches to different types of democracy will be discussed at the conference 'Democracy beyond Institutional Orders?,' which will take place on April 20, at 9.00 am, at the IEA. Anja Mihr, founder and program director at the Center on Governance through Human Rights, Humboldt-Viadrina Governance Platform in Berlin, will address multilevel, multi-stakeholder, liquid and "beyond institutionalism" democracies. The issue of what would happen if the institutions - parliaments, governments, political parties and even courts and effective bureaucracies - were no longer key to stakeholders will also be addressed. The IEA will offer live broadcast through its website.

Seminário debate a luta por melhores condições de vida de segmentos urbanos vulneráveis
Representantes de vários segmentos sociais vulneráveis e em luta por melhores condições de vida no espaço urbano apresentarão suas posições no seminário Movimentos e Grupos Urbanos Recentes: Vozes da Cidade, no dia 6 de abril, às 10h, no IEA, com transmissão ao vivo pela internet. As discussões serão orientadas por três aspectos: 1) como esses segmentos sociais são atingidos por processos de segregação, constrangimento e danos sociais, físicos e simbólicos promovidos pela dinâmica de produção do espaço urbano; 2) como se compõe o repertório de ações para os grupos sociais em questão; e 3) quais as especificidades da ação coletiva no momento atual. O encontro é uma iniciativa do Grupo de Estudos de Teoria Urbana Crítica. Para participar, é necessário realizar inscrição.
Seminar debates the struggle of vulnerable urban segments for better living conditions
Representatives from various vulnerable social segments struggling for better living conditions in urban space will present their positions at the seminar 'Recent Urban Movements and Groups: Voices of the City,' on April 6, at 10.00 am, at the IEA, with a live webcast. The discussions will be guided by three aspects: 1) how these social segments are affected by processes of segregation, constraint, and social, physical and symbolic damages promoted by the dynamics of urban space production; 2) how to compose the repertoire of actions for the social groups in question; and 3) what the specificities of collective action at the present time are. The meeting is an initiative of IEA's Study Group on Critical Urban Theory.
