Ciclo de debates apresentará propostas em economia, educação, inovação e saúde
Às vésperas de uma das eleições mais tensas da história do país, o IEA reunirá renomados especialistas para debater propostas para o Brasil, com foco na economia, educação, inovação e saúde. O ciclo Eleições 2018: Propostas para o Brasil terá quatro encontros, sempre às 10h, em eventos com dois expositores. Cada um deles apresentará cinco propostas que consideram imprescindíveis para destravar áreas-chave no desenvolvimento do país, as quais embasarão uma carta aos candidatos a presidente do país. Os expositores serão: em educação, José Goldemberg e Maurício Holanda (dia 31 de agosto); em economia, Marc os Lisboa e Bernard Appy (dia 3 de setembro); em inovação, Carlos Américo Pacheco e Fernanda De Negri (dia 17 de setembro); e em saúde, Drauzio Varella e Mario Scheffer (dia 28 de setembro).

Cycle of debates will present proposals in economy, education, innovation and health
On the eve of one of the most tense elections in Brazilian history, the IEA will bring together renowned experts to discuss proposals for the country, focusing on economy, education, innovation and health. The cycle '2018 Elections: Proposals for Brazil' will have four events with two exhibitors, always starting at 10.00 am. Each of them will present five proposals they consider essential to unlock key areas in the development of the country, which will base a letter to the candidates for president. The exhibitors of the thematic session will be: José Goldemberg and Maurício Holanda (Education, on August 31), Marcos Lisboa and Bernard Appy (Economy, on September 3), Carlos Américo Pacheco and Fernanda De Negri (Innovation, on&nb sp;September 17), and Drauzio Varella and Mario Scheffer (Health, on September 28).

Seminário debate uso da tecnologia em favor da sustentabilidade das cidades
O segundo seminário do ciclo UrbanSus: Sustentabilidade Urbana irá debater como a tecnologia pode ser utilizada de forma transversal e sistêmica para contribuir com o desenvolvimento sustentável das cidades brasileiras. No encontro Inovação, Sustentabilidade e Ação Sistêmica nas Cidades, que acontece no dia 22 de agosto, das 8h30 às 17h30, os temas de discussão serão: cidades inteligentes, cidades sustentáveis, inovação nas cidades e formação de profissionais para realizar o planejamento e implementação de intervenções sistêmicas, que utilizem da tecnologia para promoção de ambientes urbanos sustentáveis.

Seminar debates the use of technology in favor of city sustainability
The second seminar of the cycle 'UrbanSus: Urban Sustainability' will discuss how technology can be used in a transversal and systemic way to contribute to the sustainable development of Brazilian cities. At the meeting 'Innovation, Sustainability and Systemic Action in Cities,' which will take place on August 22, from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, the topics will be: smart cities, sustainable cities, innovation in cities and professional training to carry out the planning and implementation of systemic interventions that use technology to promote sustainable urban environments.

Encontro discute a importância da pesquisa no combate à violência contra a mulher
Apesar de 12 anos de existência da Lei Maria da Penha, a violência contra as mulheres por razões de gênero continua apresentando níveis alarmantes e escalas crescentes de gravidade. Para tratar da produção de pesquisas científicas como eixo estruturante das políticas de enfrentamento à violência contra as mulheres, o Grupo de Pesquisa Direitos Humanos, Democracia, Política e Memória do IEA e o USP Mulheres realizam, no dia 23 de agosto, às 14h, o seminário Acesso à Informação e Violência contra as Mulheres. O encontro terá como referências a experiência portuguesa do Observatório Nacional de Violência e Gênero (ONVG) da UNL e a Pe squisa de Condições Socioeconômicas e Violência Doméstica e Familiar contra a Mulher (PCSVDFMulher), com a presença dos responsáveis por ambos os estudos. A coordenação será da socióloga Wânia Pasinato, assessora do USP Mulheres.

Meeting discusses the importance of research to combat violence against women
Despite 12 years of existence of 'Maria da Penha' Law, violence against women for gender reasons still presents alarming levels and increasing scales of gravity. In order to address the production of scientific research as the structuring axis of policies to combat violence against women, IEA's Human Rights, Democracy, Policy and Memory Research Group, and USP Women will hold the seminar 'Access to Information and Violence against Women' on August 23, at 2.00 pm. The meeting will use the Portuguese experiences of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa's National Observatory on Violence and Gender (ONVG), and the Survey of Socioeconomic Conditions, and Domestic and Family Violence against Women (PCSVDFMulher) as references, counting on the presence of the supervisors of both studies. Coordination will be in charge of sociologist Wânia Pasinato, advisor to USP Women.

Breda Skrjanec faz conferência sobre mudanças na gravura desde os anos 80
A gravura contemporânea evoluiu de seus processos básicos para um território interdisciplinar mais amplo, que cobre grande parte da prática artística pós-moderna. A avaliação é da curadora de artes visuais Breda Skrjanec, do Centro Internacional de Artes Gráficas da Eslovênia, que falará sobre as mudanças na conferência Perspectivas da Técnica da Gravura - Pensando através da História até os Processos Pós-Modernos e Intervenção Social, no dia 27 de agosto, às 10h30, no IEA. O evento será em inglês, sem tradução. Para Breda, um marco na evolução recente da gravura foi a exposição "Thinki ng Print: Books to Billboards, 1980-1995", realizada pelo Museu de Arte Moderna (MoMa) de Nova York em 1996. Essa mostra "detectou e legitimou mudanças na gravura contemporânea para um campo expandido".

Breda Škrjanec gives a conference on printmaking changes since the 1980s
Contemporary printmaking evolved from its basic processes to a broader interdisciplinary territory which covers much of the postmodern artistic practice. The assessment is by visual arts curator Breda Škrjanec, from the International Centre of Graphic Arts in Slovenia, who will speak about the changes at the conference 'Printmaking Technique Perspectives: Thinking Through History to Postmodern Processes and Social Intervention,' to be held onAugust 27, at 10.30 am, at the IEA. For Škrjanec, a landmark in the recent evolution of printmaking was the exhibition 'Thinking Print: Books to Billboards, 1980-1995,' held by the MoMa, in New York, in 1996. It "detected and legitimized changes in contemporary printmaking to an expanded field."

130 anos depois da abolição, seminário avalia as nuances da emancipação brasileira
No dia 31 de agosto, oito pesquisadores farão um balanço dos 130 anos da Lei Áurea. O seminário 130 Anos da Abolição: Emancipação, Inclusão, Exclusão, que acontece das 14h às 18h30, discutirá os problemas e consequências do modelo emancipatório adotado aqui e nos Estados Unidos. Entre os expositores e debatedores, da USP e de outras instituições, estão Maria Helena Pereira Toledo Machado, professora da Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas (FFLCH) da USP e participante do Programa Ano Sabático de 2018 do IEA, e Lilia Schwarcz, professora da FFLCH e Global Professor da Universidade de Princeton, nos EUA. Este ano, elas publicaram o livro Emancipação, Inclusão e Exclusão: Desafios do Passado e do Presente (Edusp, 2018), que apresenta parte dos debates da Conferência Humanidades USP de 2013.

130 years after the abolition of slavery in Brazil, seminar evaluates the nuances of emancipation
On August 31, eight researchers will take stock of the 130 years of the Golden Law ('Lei Áurea)'. The seminar '130 Years of Abolition: Emancipation, Inclusion, Exclusion,' which will take place from 2.00 pm to 6.30 pm, will discuss the problems and consequences of the emancipatory model adopted in Brazil and in the United States. Among the speakers and debaters there will be Maria Helena Pereira Toledo Machado, a professor at USP's Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Literature, and Human Sciences (FFLCH,) and a participant in IEA's 2018 Sabbatical Year Program, and Lilia Schwarcz, a professor at FFLCH and a Global Professor at Princeton University. This year, both of them published the book 'Emancipation, Inclusion and E xclusion: Challenges of the Past and the Present' (Edusp, 2018,) which presents part of the debates of the USP Humanities Conference of 2013.
