Diretor-geral da Pinacoteca apresenta seu plano para o museu
Jochen Volz, diretor-geral da Pinacoteca de São Paulo desde maio, estará no IEA no dia 7 de agosto, às 14h, para apresentar seu plano para o museu e dialogar com especialistas da área sobre gestão cultural. Além de Martin Grossmann, coordenador do Grupo de Pesquisa Fórum Permanente: Sistema Cultural entre o Público e o Privado, que organiza o encontro, participarão do debate Ana Letícia Fialho, do Ministério da Cultura; Daniel Rangel, do N+1 Arte Cultura; Felipe Arruda e Paulo Myiada, do Instituto Tomie Ohtake; Ilana Goldstein, da Universidade Federal de São Paulo; Jorge Schwartz, do Museu Lasar Segall; José Augusto Ribeiro, da Pinacoteca;e Luciana Guimarães, da Fundação Bienal de São Paulo . A atividade terá transmissão ao vivo pelo site do IEA.
Director of Pinacoteca presents his plans for the museum
Jochen Volz, director of the São Paulo Pinacoteca since May, will be at the IEA on August 7, at 2:00 pm, to present his plan for the museum and to exchange ideas with cultural management specialists. Panelists include Martin Grossmann, coordinator of the Permanent Forum Research Group: Cultural System Between the Public and the Private, which organizes the encounter; Ana Leticia Fialho, from the Ministry of Culture; Daniel Rangel, from N+1 Arte Cultura; Felipe Arruda and Paulo Myiada, from Tomie Ohtake Institute; Ilana Goldstein, from the Federal University of São Paulo; Jorge Schwartz, from Lasar Segall Museum; José Augusto Ribeiro, from the Pinacoteca museum; and Luciana Guimarães, from the Bienal de São Paulo Foundation. The event will be streamed on the IEA website.
Relação entre arte, cultura e política será tema de encontros da Cátedra Olavo Setubal em agosto
Três encontros neste mês marcarão o início das atividades da Cátedra Olavo Setubal de Arte, Cultura e Ciência sob a titularidade de Ricardo Ohtake. No dia 15 de agosto, o seminário Arte & Política: Um Retrospecto da Carreira de Ricardo Ohtake reunirá grandes nomes da cultura nacional. O debate acontece das 14h30 às 17h30, na Sala Adoniran Barbosa do Centro Cultural São Paulo. Os outros dois encontros avaliarão a contribuição central de cinco instituições culturais em São Paulo, sempre com a presença de gestores da área e com a moderação de Ricardo Ohtake. O primeiro, em 22 de agosto, às 14h30, será no Museu Afro Brasil, seguido pela atividade do dia 29 de agosto, no mesmo horário, na Sala Multiuso do Itaú Cultural. Todos os eventos terão transmissão ao vivo no site do IEA.
Relationship between art, culture and politics will be the subject of meetings of the Olavo Setubal Chair in August
Three seminars this month will mark the beginning of the activities of the Olavo Setubal Chair in Art, Culture and Science under the stewardship of Ricardo Ohtake. On August 15, the seminar “Art & Politics: A Retrospect of the Career of Ricardo Ohtake” will bring together important names of the Brazilian cultural scene to offer a retrospective of Ricardo Ohtake’s career as a cultural leader in São Paulo. The debate will take place from 2:30 to 5:30 pm, in the Adoniran Barbosa Room of Centro Cultural São Paulo. The other two meetings will appraise the key contributions of five cultural institutions in São Paulo, with the presence of managing officers from the area and moderation by Ricardo Ohtake. The first, on August 22, at 2:30 pm, will be at the Afro Brasil Mu seum, followed by the event on August 29, also at 2:30 pm, in the Multipurpose Room of the Itaú Cultural Institute.

Conferência relaciona o poder dos livros com o medo e as censuras através da história
Jean-Yves Mollier, professor emérito da Universidade de Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, França, falará na Sala de Eventos do IEA sobre o poder dos livros e como eles foram combatidos e censurados através dos séculos. O encontro Quem tem medo dos livros?acontece no dia 17 de agosto, às 10h30, com tradução simultânea e transmissão ao vivo pela web. Para participação presencial, é necessário inscrição prévia. Mollier dedicou sua carreira à história do livro, da edição e das práticas de leitura na França do século XIX ao século XXI. O encontro é organizado por Marisa Midori Deaecto, da Escola de Comunicações e Artes (ECA) da USP, integrante o Programa Ano Sabático do IEA.
Conference relates the power of books to fear and censorship in history
Jean-Yves Mollier, professor emeritus at the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, France, will speak at the IEA’s Event Room on the power of books and how they have been opposed and censored over the centuries. The symposium “Who is afraid of the books?” takes place on August 17, at 10:30 am, with simultaneous translation (French to Portuguese) and live webcasting. For attendance in person, prior registration is required. Mollier devoted his career to the history of books, printing and reading practices in Fra nce from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century. The meeting is organized by Marisa Midori Deaecto, from USP’s School of Communications and Arts, and is part of the IEA’s Sabbatical Year Program.

A Academia como instituição ocidental e suas relações com o ensino superior
O artista e professor espanhol Antoni Muntadas, do Instituto de Arquitetura de Veneza, Itália, faz a conferência Sobre Academia no dia 18 de agosto, às 14h, na Sala de Eventos do IEA, quando discutirá o projeto de mesmo nome que ele tem apresentado em vários países. O trabalho é constituído por uma exposição que estimula a reflexão sobre dois aspectos: a relação entre as estruturas universitárias e a Academia, considerada como instituição do ocidente, e a forma como a diversidade do sistema americano de ensino superior influencia a educação e, consequentemente, os vários modelos pedagógicos. Na conferência, ele vai propor um debate orientado pela s características do modelo de ensino superior brasileiro. O evento é organizado pelo Grupo de Pesquisa Fórum Permanente: Sistema Cultural entre o Público e o Privado e tem coordenação de Martin Grossmann. Haverá transmissão ao vivo pela web. A participação presencial requer inscrição prévia.
The Academy as a Western institution and its relationship with higher education
The Spanish artist and professor Antoni Muntadas, from the Architecture Institute of Venice, Italy, will give the lecture “On the Academy” on August 18, at 2:00 pm, in the IEA’s Events Room, when he will discuss the eponymous project that he has presented in many countries. The conference includes an exposition that stimulates reflection on two issues: the relationship between university structures and the Academy, considered as an institution of the Western world, and how the diversity of the American system of higher learning influences education and, consequently, various teaching models. At the event, he will propose a debate guided by the characteristics of the Brazilian higher education model. The event is organized by the “Permanent Forum Research Group: Cultural System Between the Public and the Private” and is coordinated by Martin Grossmann. The event will be streamed on the IEA website. For attendance in person, prior registration is required.

Legado das Olimpíadas do Rio será tema de seminário
Apesar dos recursos investidos, as Olimpíadas Rio 2016 deixaram um legado questionável para a cidade-sede e para os atletas. O assunto será discutido no encontro Um Ano Depois: O que Restou dos Jogos Olímpicos do Rio de Janeiro, que acontece no dia 7 de agosto, às 9h, na Antiga Sala do Conselho Universitário da USP. “O legado material ficou num vácuo até dois meses atrás, porque autoridades municipais e estaduais disseram que não tinham condições de cuidar daquilo”, comenta a organizadora do evento Katia Rubio, professora da Escola de Educação Física e Esporte (EEFE) da USP e integrante do Programa Ano Sabático do IEA. Haverá transmissão ao vivo pelo site do IEA. Para participar presencialmente é necessário realizar inscrição prévia.
Legacy of the Rio Olympics will be the subject of a seminar
After nearly one year, the 2016 Rio Olympics left a questionable legacy for the host city and for the athletes. This issue will be discussed at the forum “One Year Later: What Remains of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games,” to be held on August 7, at 9:00 am, in the Old Room of USP’s University Council. “The material legacy remained in a limbo until two months ago, because municipal and state authorities said they were unable to care for it,” observes event organizer Katia Rubio, professor at USP’s School of Physical Education and Sports and a member of the IEA’s Sabbatical Year Program. There will be streamed live on the IEA website. Pre-registration is r equired to attend the event in person.

Encontro reúne pesquisadores que estudam aprendizado de máquina na USP e em empresas
Empresas, pesquisadores e grupos de pesquisa se reunirão no Strategic Workshop Aprendizado de Máquina na Universidade de São Paulo, que acontece no dia 14 de agosto, às 8h30, na Sala de Eventos do IEA. De acordo com os organizadores, a área de aprendizado de máquina sofreu grande avanço nos últimos anos. Sistemas de recomendação, decisão, classificação e extração de informações, diagnóstico e apoio ao ensino estão sendo automatizados a uma velocidade avassaladora. O workshop reunirá pessoas que trabalham com o tema, identificando interesses comuns e complementares que possam levar a projetos de colaboração. Para participar, é necessário realizar inscrição. Quem não puder comparecer, pode acompanhar ao vivo pela web.
Seminar brings together researchers who study machine learning at USP and in companies
Company representatives, researchers and research groups will meet at the “Machine Learning Strategic Workshop” at the University of São Paulo, which will take place on August 14, at 8:30 am, in IEA’s Events Room. According to the organizers, the field of machine learning has made great strides in recent years. Systems of recommendation, decision making, information classification and extraction, diagnosis and teaching support are being automated at breathtaking speed. This workshop wants to bring together people who work in the area, identifying common and complementary interests that may lead to collaborative projects. Registration is required to attend. For those unable to attend in person, the event will be streamed on the web.
