IEA realiza seminários sobre crise hídrica e saúde urbana na 8ª Virada Sustentável
O programa USP Cidades Globais do IEA promoverá dois seminários na 8ª Virada Sustentável, que começa esta semana em São Paulo. No dia 25 de agosto, o painel As Dimensões das Crises Hídricas em São Paulo discutirá o tema com base nas pesquisas apresentadas no "Livro Branco da Água", publicação lançada recentemente pelo IEA e pela Aciesp. No domingo, 26, os convidados buscarão demonstrar como diferentes fatores — ambientais, sociais e econômicos — influenciam a saúde e a qualidade de vida das populações urbanas. O ponto de partida da discussão será o livro "Vida Urbana e Saúde - Os Desafios dos Habitantes das Metrópoles", lançado recentemente por Paulo Saldiva, diretor do IEA e um dos palestrantes. Os dois encontros acontecerão no auditório do MAC, no Ibirapuera, sempre às 11h.

IEA holds seminars on water crisis and urban health at the 8th "Virada Sustentável"
Two seminars of the 8th "Virada Sustentável," a round-the-clock event which begins this week in São Paulo, will be promoted by USP Global Cities Program, linked to the IEA. On August 25, the panel "The Dimensions of the Water Crisis in São Paulo" will discuss the theme based on the research presented in "Livro Branco da Água" (or "The White Paper of Water",) a recent publication by the IEA in partnership with the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences (ACIESP). On August 26, the presenters will seek to demonstrate how environmental, social and economic factors influence health and quality of life of urban populations. The starting point of the discussion will be "Urban Life and Health - The Challenges of the Inhabitants of M etropolises," a newly launched book by Professor Paulo Saldiva, director at the IEA. Both meetings will take place in the Museum of Contemporary Art's auditorium, at 11:00 am.

Conferência analisa as relações entre filosofia e medicina
Na conferência Reflexões sobre Filosofia e Medicina, no dia 27 de agosto, às 14h, primeira de uma série, a doutora em filosofia Monica Aiub, diretora do Interseção - Instituto de Filosofia Clínica de São Paulo, pretende "estimular a reflexão sobre as práticas cotidianas dos profissionais de medicina e filosofia, tendo como referência o ser humano, considerado em seus múltiplos aspectos". O patologista Paulo Saldiva, diretor do IEA e professor da Faculdade de Medicina da USP (FMUSP), será o debatedor. A moderação estará a cargo da comunicóloga e pedagoga Liana Gottlieb, da Fundação Cásper Líbero.

Conference examines the relationship between philosophy and medicine
At the conference "Reflections on Philosophy and Medicine," to be held on August 27, at 2:00 pm, PhD in philosophy Monica Aiub, director of the Intersection Institute of Clinical Philosophy of São Paulo, will aim to "stimulate reflection on everyday practices of professionals of medicine and philosophy, having the human being as reference, considered in its multiple aspects and object of these practices." Pathologist Paulo Saldiva, director of the IEA and a professor at USP's School of Medicine (FMUSP,) will be the debater. The moderator will be communicator and pedagogue Liana Gottlieb, from the Cásper Líbero Foundation. There will be a live webcast of all the programme over the internet.

Encontro relaciona segurança hídrica e Objetivos de Desenvolvimento Sustentável
As principais questões relativas à ampliação da segurança hídrica em diversas regiões do planeta serão discutidas, de 29 de agosto a 1º de setembro, no 1º Workshop Internacional Linking Water Security to the Sustainable Development Goals, com a participarão de pesquisadores e profissionais de diversos países. As exposições e debates serão em inglês, sem tradução.

Meeting relates water security and Sustainable Development Goals
The main issues related to the expansion of water security in various regions of the planet will be discussed at the 1st International Workshop "Linking Water Security to the Sustainable Development Goals," to be held from August 29 to September 1 with the participation of researchers and professionals from several countries. There will be a live webcast of all the programme over the internet. The presentations and debates will be in English.

Série de encontros debaterá políticas públicas para o Brasil superar crise
Em meio a uma crise político-econômica aguda, o Brasil realiza este ano a eleição presidencial mais atribulada desde a redemocratização. Com o objetivo de contribuir para a adoção de políticas pelo próximo governo que retirem o país da situação em que se encontra, o IEA organiza o ciclo de debates Eleições 2018: Propostas para o Brasil, sempre às 10h, no IEA, sem inscrição prévia. O primeiro dos quatro encontros acontece no dia 31 de agosto e discutirá propostas para a educação. Os outros debates serão nos dias 3, 17, 20 e 28 de setembro e discutirão políticas para, respectivamente: economia ; ciência, tecnologia e inovação; gestão pública; e saúde. Outra iniciativa propositiva do Instituto é o seminário Brasil: O Futuro que Queremos, no dia 4 de setembro, às 14h, quando serão discutidas, por alguns autores do livro homônimo, ideias para as áreas de segurança pública e saúde. Este encontro requer inscrição. Todas as atividades serão no IEA.

Series of meetings will discuss public policies for Brazil to overcome crisis
In the midst of an acute political-economic crisis, Brazil will hold the most troubled presidential elections since redemocratization. In order to contribute to the adoption of public policies by the next government, the IEA has organized the cycle of debates "Elections 2018: Proposals for Brazil." The first of four meetings will take place on August 31 and will address proposals for education. The other debates will be on September 3, 17, 20 and 28, and will respectively discuss policies for economy, science, technology and innovation, public administration and health. Another initiative proposed by the Institute is the seminar 'Brazil: The Future We Want,' to be held on September 4, when some authors of the eponymous book will discuss ideas for the areas of public safety and healt h.

Edição 93 de “Estudos Avançados” reflete sobre o ensino de humanidades
O dossiê “Ensino de Humanidades” da edição 93 da revista “Estudos Avançados”, lançada este mês, abre uma série de publicações em que o periódico tratará de temas relacionados ao ensino básico. Os textos do dossiê tratam de aspectos conjunturais da educação brasileira e trazem reflexões sobre o ensino de filosofia, história, geografia, música, literatura e religião. Para o editor da revista, Alfredo Bosi, é preciso “pensar o saber de modo holístico e problemático”. A revista tem ainda três outras seções: “Vida urbana e saúde”, “Artes e cultura” e uma homenagem ao economista Paul Singer, morto em abril deste ano.

Issue #93 of "Estudos Avançados" reflects on the teaching of humanities
"Teaching Humanities," main dossier of the latest issue of IEA's "Estudos Avançados," opens a series of publications in which the journal will address topics related to basic education. The papers of the dossier deal with conjunctural aspects of Brazilian education and reflect on the teaching of philosophy, history, geography, music, literature and religion. For editor Alfredo Bosi, it is necessary to "think about knowledge in a holistic and problematic way". Three further sections complete the issue: "Urban Life and Health," "Arts and Culture," and a tribute to economist Paul Singer, who passed away last April.

Livro reúne ensaios sobre a crise hídrica de 2013-2015
O IEA e a Academia de Ciências do Estado de São Paulo (Aciesp) publicaram um livro analítico sobre a crise hídrica que assolou a Região Metropolitana de São Paulo (RMSP) entre 2013 e 2015. O “Livro Branco da Água” é resultado de uma série de estudos sobre as causas e consequências do desabastecimento hídrico que limitou o acesso à água de pelo menos 20 milhões de pessoas. O trabalho também propõe ações para assegurar o futuro do abastecimento hídrico na RMSP. Os artigos que compõem o livro foram escritos por pesquisadores do IEA e convidados, com organização do biólogo Marcos Buckeridge, coordenador do Programa USP Cidades Globais do IEA, e do geólogo Wagner Costa Ribeiro.

Paper gathers essays on the 2013-2015 water crisis
The IEA and ACIESP have published an analytical book on the water crisis that devastated the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo (RMSP) between 2013 and 2015. "The White Paper of Water" is the result of a series of studies on the causes and consequences of the water shortages that have limited access to water for at least 20 million people. The work also proposes actions to ensure the future of water supply in the RMSP. The articles that make up the book have been written by IEA researchers and guest authors, and organized by biologist Marcos Buckeridge, coordinator of USP Global Cities USP Program, and geologist Wagner Costa Ribeiro.
