Conferência discute filosofia e neurociência
O desenvolvimento da neurociência trouxe uma forte tendência a buscar soluções para problemas de qualquer natureza a partir do estudo dos neurônios. No dia 6 de novembro, no IEA, às 14h, uma conferência tentará responder às perguntas: A neurociência pode servir de fundamento epistemológico a outras ciências? Quais são seus próprios fundamentos epistemológicos? O que os resultados das pesquisas na área apontam? Da pesquisa à clínica, que implicações surgem a partir da busca por soluções no estudo do neurônio? Este é o quarto encontro do ciclo Reflexões sobre Filosofia e Medicina, promovido pelo IEA em parceria com a Edito ra FiloCzar.

Conference discusses philosophy and neuroscience
The development of neuroscience has brought a strong tendency to seek solutions to problems of any kind from the study of the neuron. A conference at the IEA will try to answer the following questions on November 6, from 2:00 pm: Can neuroscience serve as an epistemological foundation to other sciences? What are its own epistemological foundations? Where do the research results in this field point to? From research to clinical practice, what implications arise from the search for solutions in the study of the neuron? This will be the fourth meeting of the cycle "Reflections on Philosophy and Medicine," promoted by the IEA in partnership with the publishing house FiloCzar.

Abertas as inscrições para o 2º Congresso de História da Ciência e da Técnica
Os interessados em apresentar comunicação oral ou pôster no 2º Congresso de História da Ciência e da Técnica, têm até o dia 25 de novembro para encaminhar os resumos das contribuições à coordenação do encontro. Organizado pelo Centro Interunidades de História da Ciência (CHC) da USP e pelo Grupo de Pesquisa Khronos: História da Ciência, Epistemologia e Medicina do IEA, o congresso será realizado de 10 a 12 de abril de 2019, na USP. A notificação do aceite dos trabalhos será feita no dia 16 de dezembro. O congresso tem por tema "Desafios Contemporâneos".

Applications for the 2nd Congress on the History of Science and Technology
Those interested in presenting oral communication or a poster at the 2nd Congress on the History of Science and Technology have until November 25 to submit abstracts of contributions to the coordination of the meeting. Organized by USP's Intercultural Center for the History of Science (CHC) and the Khronos Research Group: History of Science, Epistemology and Medicine, the congress will be held from April 10 to 12, 2019, with the theme "Contemporary Challenges." A notification of acceptance of the works will be sent on December 16.

A memória do nazifascismo e a resistência a ele são tema de encontro
Pesquisadores de várias áreas dos estudos alemães participarão do seminário Memória, Democracia e Resistência: Reflexões sobre o Nazifascismo na Alemanha, que acontece dia 8 de novembro, às 14h30, no IEA. O evento rememora os 80 anos da “Noite dos Cristais”. Os expositores discutirão, a partir de diferentes perspectivas, as repercussões do regime nazista ontem e hoje. A iniciativa é uma realização do Grupo de Pesquisa Qualidade da Democracia do IEA e da Cátedra Martius de Estudos Alemães e Europeus.

Seminar addresses the memory of Nazifascism and resistance to it
Researchers from various fields of German studies will participate in the seminar "Memory, Democracy and Resistance: Reflections on Nazifascism in Germany," which will take place on November 8, at 2:30 pm, at the IEA. The event recalls the 80th anniversary of the "Kristallnacht" (Crystal Night). The presenters will discuss the repercussions of the Nazi regime now and then from different perspectives. The initiative is an achievement of IEA's Quality of Democracy Research Group and the Martius Chair for German and European Studies.

Pesquisadores debatem efeitos perniciosos dos desreguladores endócrinos
Presentes em inúmeros produtos do comércio varejista, os desreguladores endócrinos afetam o funcionamento de várias glândulas humanas. Seus efeitos serão analisados no evento Conversa sobre Desreguladores Endócrinos, no dia 12 de novembro, às 15h, no IEA. As expositoras serão Elaine Maria Frade Costa (IEA, Faculdade de Medicina da USP e Sociedade Brasileira de Endocrinologia e Metabologia) e Maria Izabel Chiamolera (Escola Paulista de Medicina da Unifesp).

Researchers debate the pernicious effects of endocrine disruptors
Present in countless retail products, endocrine disruptors affect the functioning of various human glands. Their effects will be analyzed at the "Talk about Endocrine Disruptors," on November 12, at 3:00 pm, at the IEA. The presenters will be Elaine Maria Frade Costa, a professor at USP's School of Medicine, and member of the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabology, and Maria Izabel Chiamolera, from UNIFESP's School of Medicine.

Colecionadores e conservadores de bibliotecas públicas e privadas tratarão das principais questões relacionadas com o colecionismo, conservação e memória dos livros no seminário Bibliofilia: Circuitos e Memórias, nos dias 12 e 13 de novembro, das 10 às 16h, na Sala Villa-Lobos da Biblioteca Brasiliana Guita e José Mindlin (BBM) da USP. O encontro é uma realização do Grupo de Pesquisa Tempo, Memória e Pertencimento do IEA e da BBM-USP.

Seminar reflects on the memory and diversity of bibliophilia in Brazil
Collectors and curators of public and private libraries will address the main issues related to collecting, preserving and memory of books in the seminar "Bibliophilia: Circuits and Memories," to be held on November 12 and 13, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, in the Villa-Lobos Room of USP's Brasiliana Guita and José Mindlin Library (BBM). The meeting is an accomplishment of the research group Time, Memory and Belonging, linked to the IEA and BBM-USP.

Documento ressalta urgência para mudanças nas universidades brasileiras
O documento "USP: Propostas de Agenda para o Futuro", elaborado pelo Grupo de Trabalho A USP diante dos Desafios do Século 21, foi apresentado por dois de seus autores, Luiz Bevilacqua, professor visitante do IEA e ex-reitor da UFABC, e Naomar de Almeida Filho, ex-reitor da UFBA e da UFSB, no encontro A USP diante do Espelho, no dia 10 de outubro. Eles debateram as propostas para mudanças nas universidades brasileiras com sete outros especialistas.

Document stresses urgency for changes in Brazilian universities
The document "USP: Proposals for the Future," organized by the Work Group "USP in the Face of the 21st Century's Challenges," was presented by two of its authors: Luiz Bevilacqua, currently a visiting professor at the IEA and former president of UFABC, and Naomar de Almeida Filho, former president of UFBA and UFSB. They discussed proposals for changes in Brazilian universities with seven other specialists at the meeting "USP in front of the Mirror," on October 10.

The challenges for Brazil and the president-elect
One day after the second round of the presidential election, USP's radio news program, a partnership between the IEA, "Rádio USP" and the School of Medicine (FMUSP), presented a special edition to discuss the challenges of President-elect Jair Bolsonaro. The interviewees were André Singer, from the Department of Political Science of USP's Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Literature, and Human Sciences (FFLCH), José Álvaro Moisés, political scientist and coordinator of IEA's Quality of Democracy Research Group, and Jacques Marcovitch, from USP's School of Economics, Business and Accounting (FEA), former director of the IEA and former president of the University.
