Sinopse
The impacts of transport on the environment are of increasing significance to both planning and policy. This workshop will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of environmental impacts of transport, with particular attention to air pollution, climate change and noise. Tools and techniques to quantitatively evaluate these impacts will be covered. The context for transport’s impact on the environment and sustainability principles are introduced along with basic concepts of forces, energy and combustion, such as: (i) Air quality regulations, transport emissions of noxious pollutants and their effects on human health; (ii) The greenhouse gas (GHG) effect and the impacts of climate change, the contribution of transport to GHG emissions and how to reduce it; (iii) The physics of sound and human perception, the health impacts of noise, road traffic and aviation noise sources, the Calculation of Road Traffic Noise (CoRTN) model. Thus, this workshop will provide knowledge in techniques for quantitatively estimating fuel consumption and emissions from road transport and modelling methods to capture ‘local’ (Gaussian plume model) and ‘city’ scale (simple box model) dispersion of pollutants.

Marc Stettler
Dr Marc Stettler is a lecturer in Transport and the Environment in the Centre for Transport Studies. Prior to joining Imperial, Marc was a research associate in the Centre for Sustainable Road Freight and Energy Efficient Cities Initiative at the University of Cambridge, where he also completed his PhD.

Marc's research aims to quantify and reduce environmental impacts from transport using a range of emissions measurement and modelling tools. Recent research projects have included quantifying greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions from natural gas heavy goods vehicles; evaluating the performance of methane oxidation catalysts; using real-world vehicle emissions data to improve emissions models; quantifying the air quality impacts around airports and in urban areas; improving global estimates of aviation black carbon emissions; and evaluating aircraft engine smoke emission standards.

Marc is a member of the LoCITY ‘Policy, Procurement, Planning and Practice’ working group and the EQUA Air Quality Index Advisory Board.
