Resumo do colóquio: Scientists across the globe share a moral commitment to communicate their findings with others. This is, after all, what defines science. We measure the world around us and share our results, so they can be confirmed or disproved them. Thus, knowledge is built and we provide future generations with the tools they will need to survive. It is a common thread shared by all humanity. For large, publicly-funded science projects, such as those of particle physics research, scientists also have an obligation to report on their activities in order to justify the usage of resources to perform fundamental research. The total costs are relatively high, especially when compared to previous smaller endeavours or when put in the perspective of national budgets. Yet, those of us involved in the research understand that the rewards to humanity far exceed the costs. This can be measured in terms of the development of new technology, the training of young scientists, the building of international alliances and, most importantly but less easily quantifiable, in the advancement of human understanding of our universe. We present some of the methods currently used in particle physics to inform the public of our current research. This includes content and activities developed by experiments, laboratories, national and international networks, such as IPPOG. We also address current challenges facing our society, concerning the propagation of misinformation, and discuss how these global programs work to instil a deeper understanding of scientific process in our youth and to re-establish public trust in science.

Sobre o palestrante: Steve is a physicist from the University of Melbourne, working on the ATLAS Experiment at CERN. He is webmaster for the ATLAS public web pages, former chair of the International Particle Physics Outreach Group, on-site coordinator of the REU Summer Student and Research Semester Abroad programs for American undergraduates at CERN, and advisory board member for Quarknet. In his spare time, Steve fronts the Canettes Blues Band, the group behind the ATLAS Boogie.
