The famous Heisenberg uncertainty principle places limits on what can be learnt about the world around us. For example, the position and the momentum of an object or a spin of a particle cannot be measured with arbitrary accuracy. However, quantum mechanical limits do not preclude transmitting those “unknown” variables from one place to another. A famous example is teleportation, a disembodied transfer of a quantum state, which allows for both the position and the momentum be transferred, in principle, without adding noise. It turns out, perhaps even more surprisingly, that a trajectory of an object can be measured with an accuracy exceeding that predicted by the Heisenberg uncertainty. The conditions for this counterintuitive scenario are that the trajectory is monitored in the reference frame with an effective negative mass. In the talk, I will describe our experiments on quantum teleportation and the measurement of motion beyond standard quantum limits.
