Quantum field theory (QFT) is the undisputed basis of our current understanding of relativistic quantum physics, but nonetheless still contains major open questions regarding its mathematically rigorous formulation. In this talk, I will consider the operator-algebraic approach to QFT and explain how it gives a framework to address physically interesting questions, for instance regarding scattering, or information-theoretic properties (relative entropies, entanglement). I will also sketch how one may construct simple but non-perturbative models within this framework, and discuss a new formula for relative entropies of quantum states that is general enough to apply to the local observable algebras in quantum field theory.

Gandalf Lechner is a mathematical physicist and professor at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, where he holds a prestigious DFG Heisenberg Professorship. His research focuses on operator algebras, algebraic quantum field theory, and the rigorous construction of interacting quantum field theories.
