Living systems constantly regulate themselves through networks of chemical reactions, but where does this “control” actually reside? In this colloquium, I will introduce a framework that combines chemical reaction networks, non-equilibrium thermodynamics, and control theory to identify feedback, sensing, actuation, and adaptation directly from the underlying reversible chemistry. I will show how these concepts emerge from the stoichiometry and dynamics of a reaction network, and how different choices of what we call the “controller” can lead to different notions of robustness and feedback. Finally, I will discuss how thermodynamics constrains active chemical control, including the energetic cost of maintaining robust regulation and homeostasis.

 

Minibiografia do palestrante: 

Jonas Berx obtained his PhD in theoretical physics from KU Leuven, Belgium in 2021 and subsequently held postdoctoral research positions at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Germany, and at Leiden University in The Netherlands. He was then awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellowship to do postdoctoral work at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he is currently an Assistant Professor.
