Message from the Chair

Professor Renata Funchal, Physics Department Chair

I invite you to learn more about the Department of Mathematical Physics, its core values, mission, accomplishments, and, most important, its people: researchers, students and staff.

The 13 faculty members are engaged in fundamental research at the highest level. We are proud to host top students and postdoctoral fellows that breathe life into the academic life by advancing the frontiers of knowledge. The Department consistently sees the highest caliber of student accomplishment; it is particularly rewarding to see them supported in their pursuit of physics research by generous awards.

As chair, I am committed to upholding the values and mission imprinted since the founding of the Department in 1977, which are grounded in the principles of excellence in research and high-quality teaching and mentoring of young minds. I also envision a more diverse department and continuing to champion underrepresented groups and women in physics. I work daily to ensure that these goals will be realized during my tenure.
