Matthew has a PhD from the University of Washington (2009). He was later a post-doc at IPhT CEA Saclay (2009-2012), at McGill University / Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (2012-2014), and was a Marie Curie Fellow at the University of Santiago de Compostela (2014-2015). He started as a junior professor at USP in 2015, and since 2021 he is an Associate Professor. His work focuses on Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions, Quark-Gluon Plasma, Quantum Chromodynamics and Relativistic Viscous Fluid Dynamics.
