General information

The admissions for Master’s and Doctorate courses of PIEC occur through Selection Process.

The Selection Process is held yearly and allows the student to begin in the first or second semester.

PIEC offers academic graduate courses, in stricto sensu modality, according to the candidate’s background: Master’s for the undergraduate (Physics, Chemistry, or Biology degrees or bachelor’s degree), and Doctorate for those who hold the title of Master in the Science Education field or related fields.

The Selection Process consists of three phases:

 

Master’s Course

1st. phase - English proficiency test. For foreign candidates, a Portuguese proficiency test is also required.

2nd phase - Essay and academic curriculum analysis: the essay will be focused on Science Education themes, and should evaluate the candidate’s interpretation and argumentation skills, text coherence, and language correctness, without any kind of consultation - it won’t be provided any type of bibliography. Concerning the academic curriculum, the candidate’s academic background will be analyzed, prioritizing teaching certificates (undergraduate degree), and academic performance, the latter analyzed through undergraduate records. It must be considered: teaching experience, undergraduate research, publishments, conference attendance, participation in research, and teaching initiation projects.

3rd. phase - Oral defense: oral exam based on academic curriculum explanation, and perspective of the candidate’s insertion in one of the Program’s lines of research. 

 

Doctorate

1st phase - English and Spanish proficiency tests. For foreign candidates, a Portuguese proficiency test is also required.

2nd phase - Academic curriculum, and research project analysis: concerning the academic curriculum the candidate’s academic background will be analyzed, prioritizing teaching certificates (undergraduate degree), and academic performance, the latter analyzed through graduate records. It must be considered: teaching experience, publishments, conference attendance, participation and presentations in events of the research field, and academic advisory. The research project analysis will take into account the quality of the writing, clarity of the objectives and rationale, methodological adequacy, and relevance of the bibliography.

3rd phase - Oral defense: oral exam based on academic curriculum explanation, and perspective of the candidate’s insertion in one of the Program’s lines of research.
