The PhD student Gabriel Pereira Xavier, from the Department of Materials Physics and Mechanics (DFMT) at the Institute of Physics of USP (IFUSP), was awarded the Excellent Talk Award (Newton – Cell Press) at the APS Global Summit 2026, an event organized by the American Physical Society (APS).

Award-winning presentation: "How Stable are Perovskite Monolayers?"

The distinction recognizes the presentation titled "How Stable are Perovskite Monolayers? A First-Principles Study of Mechanical and Electronic Properties of Perovskenes", prepared from his doctoral research developed at IFUSP, under the supervision of Prof. Gustavo Dalpian.

The research uses computational simulations based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) to analyze intrinsic instabilities in halide perovskite monolayers — promising materials for optoelectronic applications —, exploring their mechanical and electronic properties in low dimensionality.

The work was carried out in collaboration with Lucas Farigliano and Roberto Hiroki, to whom Gabriel extends his thanks, in addition to his advisor. The PhD student also highlights his graduation from Ilum - CNPEM, funding from FAPESP and INCT – Materials Informatics, as well as computational resources from LNCC and CENAPAD-SP.
